Breakdown and Breakthrough

A patient once shared with me an astute observation of human nature:”We breakdown, and then we breakthrough. We then keep repeating this over and over.”

I loved this idea of the good and the bad being connected, or seen as part of a continuum. The idea that our breakdowns are not isolated events, but events that may lead to an increase in self awareness and understanding. Too often we get stuck in a negative head space. It can feel like this space will stay forever and we can’t even imagine a better place on the other side. It is often, however, from these dark places that we know ourselves better and appreciate the light.

We don’t have crystal balls but with enough experience we begin to develop a memory, or a knowing that we can get through things. Often we can be reminded of this by talking to someone or taking space. Sometimes when we are down it can help to repeat a mantra such as “This too will pass” or “I will be ok”
